One of the early books of hours made in Rouen after many artists from the leading workshops in Paris fled the capital up to 1420, heading for their personal safety, and for the new prosperity in Normandy and the North of France, to offer practical relationships with the more provincial establishment of local masters. Master A has affinities both to the Boucicaut workshop and the Bedford Trend.
It is a fascinating idea that the owner (or his wife) very well could have been standing with this book firmly grasped in his hands, when he after all probability, as an important English official witnessed that Joan of Arc was burned alive on the stake 31st May 1431 in Rouen.
Books of Hours with such long sequences of additional texts seems to be a Rouennaise speciality during the occupation of the English from 1419-1449. Most of the manuscripts in the cathegory, before 1450, with unusual long accessory texts are written for Sarum use in Rouen. (Cf. Pierpont Morgan Library, Ms. M.27 and Ms.G.9 (Plummer: Last Flowering No.21, 23.).
