A detailed Table of Contents
This complex manuscript, with a text in Middle German, but written in a fine french hand, has in course of the last century been subject to so many unfounded assumptions, misunderstandings and hasty conclusions that it could fill a long dissertation to comment on each of them.
The most important facts are:
1° The manuscript is dated 1430 in the hand af the scribe fol. 8v: a°.M.cd.30. (.cd. is visible under a much later correction 'CC' in black ink, pretending that it dates from 1230 (written later on other leaves as well), as it already was pointed out by H.Borchling in 1900).
2° It was ordered by an unidentified (probably German) man with the initials F.D. (Francis? D.) and the arms: De gueles, écartelé en sautoir engrelé, aux 2 et 3 un château à deux tour. (fol.8v). He was married to a wife with the initials B.H. and the arms: D'azur à deux houssoirs d'or passés en saut, identified by me as B(rigitte) de Hoston, from a noble family in the Hainaut-region (Rietstap II,1262). This has been supported by my discovery of the local Saint Ollego on 29th July in the Kalendarium. Alliance arms of the couple are found on f.9 and f.15.
A detailed discussion and a codicological description will follow elsewhere. This is only a survey of the iconographical contents. (Compare the contents of a different German version of the Speculum in GkS 80 2°)
