Simplified secular calendar, Bruges (?) c.1440-1450
This calendar is found in a small and modest, not to say poorly executed book of hours for Roman use, made for the open market, probably for sale in Bruges in the 1440'ies, with a number of similar modest miniatures. Its style does not have a name, it is neither related to the Gold Scrolls Group, nor to the somewhat later products in the style of the Maître aux yeux bridés. The calendar is so sparcely filled in, that the scribe probably believed he had created a neutral calendar of universal use. It is an interesting study in the art of minimalization. In so far has he prepared an excellent notepad. Certain combinations reveal, however, that it was made somewhere between Cambrai and Tournai, and we find the two popular Bruges feasts Basilij epi (14 June) and Donatiani epi (14 Oct.) in red. [Ewaldi epi on 1st July is unidentified. It can be a misreading of either Rumoldi epi (Mechelen) or Theobaldi epi (Translatio in Cologne, found in early Flemish calendars on the day as Saint Tybaut, not to be confused with Thierry)].
