CHD Kalendarium in the Copenhagen Psalter (England c.1170)

Copenhagen KB Ms.Thott 143 4°

The English calendar in the Copenhagen Psalter is in admirable rare state of preservation. By good fortune has it avoided the usual number of later additions, erasures, and corrections. Only one insignificant addition in thin ink (15th cent.) and a obit from 1272 is found, to show that it in fact was in use and appreciated centuries after its completion.
The calendar is written in four colours, creating a beatiful estetic effect. The colours are, however, not only there to serve decorative purposes. When it comes to names of the saints is the colour indicating the degree of the feast. There is no key to the system, but comparison with other calendars made it perfectly clear to the medieval reader what the meaning was. The highest degree is written in blue (with the most important solemn feasts in KAPITAL letters, as usual in the 11th-12th century), all other major feasts (duplum) are written in green and red, alternating (as it can be seen on Dec.26-28, where the 3 days following Christmas always are of equal liturgical importance). Green and red days are consequently equal in grading. Simple feasts (3 lessons and commemorations) are written in black ink. To clarify the liturgical evidence has all other entries written in coloured ink been reproduced here as black, to avoid unnessesary complexity. The facsimile is there to supplement the estetical look and as documentation for the original layout. Likewise have I omitted the Roman calendar indications, no matter how decorative they may appear, they are the same in all calendars of this type. (Golden numbers and Sunday letters are reproduced, since they are part of the standard template on this site, usefull for quick comparisons). The combination of two verses on top of each month is found in a almost identical form in a kalendar of supposed Winchester derivation from c.1060, London BL Cotton Ms. Vitellius E.xviii, (cf. Francis Wormald: English Kalendars before A.D. 1100, HBS LXXII, London 1934, p.155-167). The ancient use of e marked for æ (with a cedille that not is available in HTML) has been neglected in the transcription, it is used with some consequence, but can be considered a late remainder of a degrading tradition. In contrast to the unproportional heavy typing of the computistic entries in the publications of the Henry Bradshaw Society, have I attempted a higher priority of the liturgical evidence in the layout. There are relatively few scribal errors, the most grave is the reversal of night and day hours for January and February (16 hours daylight in January would probably be welcomed in England!).
Liturgical evidence: The calendar was probably copied after a model that could be almost a century older. Very little specific local evidence can be found. The combination of the English saints, however common they may seem separately, points very strongly to the archdiocese of York as the place of origin (Northumbria). Most important are the Augustinian feasts in blue. It was written in a male community in Northern England, not by Benedictine monks, but by an Augustinian canon regular (Octave and Translation of Augustine, and John of Beverly in blue. The fact that only the octave of St.Augustine is in blue, and his natale in red can be explained as an attempt by the scribe to give the copy in the psalter a more general secular appearence - if it not is a simple error). The omission of Translatio Sancti Martini (4 July) can hardly be interpreted as anything but a trivial error. See below the Comments on the English saints.

Notes on the calendar: The composition of the calendar was clearly made for secular use. It has carefully been cleansed of any local saint who could reveal the liturgical use of a specific church. The only major feast of any importance is the octave of saint Augustinus (of Hippo) on 4 September, indicating that the model was Augustinian, and the scribe was a canon regular. The fact that the octave has been graded higher as his feast on 28 August is a telling mistake, where the scribe inadvertently has revealed his own habits.
The absence of Thomas of Canterbury (murdered in 1170 and canonized in 1173) has been taken as a valid terminus ante quo for the date of the manuscript. It may very well be the case, but it remains to be proven that an event in Canterbury had an immediate impact on the liturgy in York.

The English Saints:
20 March: Cuthbert, from Northumbria; Monk in Melrose and Ripon, later prior in Melrose. Died as bishop of Lindisfarne (685-687). Shrine at Durham (translated 4 Sept. 999).
24 April: Wilfrid (d.744). Disciple of John of Beverley, and his abbot in the York cathedral canon community. Followed John as archbishop of York (cf. below). The day is otherwise normally occupied in early English calendars by saint Mellitus (also considered a canon regular). Some (among others Bury St. Edmunds) had both names on the day (c.1050). Only calendars from the North had Wilfrid alone (Oxford Bodl. Digby Ms.63, HBS Vol.LXXII, p.5).
7 May: John of Beverley, born in Yorkshire. Monk at Whitby, later bishop of Hexham and archbishop of York. Founder of Beverley Abbey, where he died in 721 (Shrine in the abbey). Notice the high grading of his feast (in blue), which indicates that the liturgical model also had an octave.
19 May: Dunstan (d.988), founder of Peterborough and Ely. Archbishop of Canterbury. Feast in all English calendars.
26 May: Augustinus, Apostolic envoy to England by Gregory the Great. Arcbishop of Canterbury (d.604). Venerated all over Europe, but only with a high grading in England. The commemoration of Beda on the same day is common.
17 June: Botulphus (7th cent.). Saxon, educated in Belgium, Benedictine missionary in England and founder of an abbey in Ikanhoe. Generally venerated in England, Normandy, Flanders and Scandinavia.
22 June: Albanus (3rd or 4th cent.). Venerated as prothomartyr of England. Murdered on a location where the abbey of St. Albans later was erected. Generally commemorated all over England and in several churches on the continent.
23 June: Etheldreda (Ediltrude), abbes in Ely (d.679). Generally commemorated all over England.
2 July.: Swithun (d.862). Bishop of Winchester 852-862. His relics were translated from the cemetary into the cathedral in 971. Commemorated in most English calendars. The omission of Visitatio beate Marie virginis is perhaps significant for the date of the psalter.
4 July.: Notice the omission of Translatio (Ordinatio) sancti Martini - can only be explained as a scribal error.
5 Aug.: Oswald, King of Northumbria. Head of the mission from Lindisfarne. Killed in battle 642. His cult spread over Europe in the 11th cent., where he became very popular, especially in Germany (and later was associated with the "14 Nothelfern").
20 Nov.: Edmund (King of East Anglia 855-870) was brutally murdered by the Danes. Shrine in Bury St. Edmunds (abbey build 1120). His cult was widespread, also in continental Europe (in Paris as "Emont").
