Gregorian and Gelasian Kalendars
based on Victor Leroquais: Sacramentaires et Missels manuscrits, I

The first official calendars distributed from Rome were of vital importance for the later formation of the liturgical year, as the Christian religion spread over Europe. To save time and avoid infinite repetitions, has Victor Leroquais published a list of the contents of the sacramentarium which pope Hadrian send to Charlemagne (Cf. The Gregorian Sacramentary, published by H.A.Wilson for the Henry Bradshaw Society, vol.XLIX, 1915, and by H.Lietzmann: Das Sacramentarium Gregorianum nach dem Aachener Urexemplar, Münster 1921).
As supplement has Leroquais added a number of feasts from a Gelasian sacramentary from Gellone (Paris BN ms.lat.12048, Sacramentaires et Missels manuscrits, I, 1924 p.1-8) from the 8th cent. (Cf. H.Wilson: The Gelasian sacramentary, Oxford 1894). Together is the list the nucleus of all later liturgical calendars, and can guide the student in the process of finding the special saints in any local use. For the student with little experience is it a powerful tool, because it will eliminate almost half of the entries in a normal calendar.
The occurrence of the following saints can be taken for granted (even if several are omitted), and it is a waste of time to note their presence (or absence) in any liturgical calendar, if the primary purpose is to locate the origin or use of the source. The rubricated days are those who are of the highest feast degree everywhere - all the feasts of the Virgin and the two Cross-feasts are nomally also in red. The rubrication of many of the apostles and evangelists are subject to random variations, which rarely have any significance in psalters or books of hours.
Many extremely popular medieval saints, present in every calendar, are not on the list, because they either were unknown at the time, or later vere venerated on different days in each region, like Margaret of Antioch and Barbara (the cult of Saint Katherine dates only from the 12th century).
